The Asia-Pacific Fellowship Programme 2009 – IJP Berlin

Every year, the German-Asia-Pacific Programme gives six to eight Asian and six to eight German journalists between the ages of 28 to 38 years the opportunity to work in the other country.

The IJP offers a opportunity for talented Journalists working in The People’s Republic of China/Hongkong, The Republic of Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, India and Socialist Republic of Vietnam to come to Germany in May and June 2010.

The delegates work for eight weeks in Asian (English language) and German media. At the same time they research their own stories and work as correspondents for their home newsrooms. Hereby, the delegates gain a thorough insight into the politics, economy and culture of the host country as well as getting an impression of the day to day working practices of the host media. In individual cases a pure research bursary without attachment to a newsroom may be granted.

In early May all delegates come together for an intensive introduction seminar in Berlin. This is immediately followed by the traditional alumni meeting of former German delegates which guarantees a platform for intensive exchanges of information, tips and experiences.

Mode of Payment

All delegates of the programme receive a one-off payment of 3,600 Euro from IJP. This should cover most travel, food and accommodation expenses as well as health insurance. Payment by the host media for the work produced is not expected. Delegates from Asia may receive an extra 300 Euro to finance German language tuition.

Application

Asian and German journalists between the ages of 28 to 38 years who regularly contribute to German or Asian newspapers, TV and radio media as well as online services can apply. Very good English language skills for the German applicants as well as good English and German skills for the Asian applicants are an important precondition for the application.

Knowledge of an Asian language are desirable but not essential for German applicants. Applicants should send the following application documents to the above contact address: A curriculum vitae in English or German, a passport photograph, a brief description of your research aims in the host country as well a journalistic reference from your editor. The reference should have the double function of supporting your application as well as guaranteeing that you will be available for the entire duration of the programme.
