About the MyCare Project

The MyCare project is a joint initiative of the Computer Science Department of the University of Groningen and of the Department of Psychiatry of the Groningen University Medical Hospital. MyCare aims at building information technology tools to support patients with schizophrenia for personal recovery and risk assessment. The tools are tested with actual patients in a controlled environment. This exciting PhD project combines the creation of innovative software tools with actual medical field work.

The position is financed in the context of the Dutch ZonMW program for medical innovation. Another PhD student will be hired to work on the MyCare project in the field of Psychiatry.

In the 2006 – 2008 period, 9 talented students from outside the EER received financial support from our MMD Study Fund. For the 2009 curriculum year, 6 talented non-EER students have been selected that receive full scholarships covering all study and living costs. These students come from Turkey, India, Ethiopia, and Zambia.

For the 2010 curriculum year, we will also select 6 non-EER students that will receive a full scholarship. Candidates for the MMD scholarship however must apply before 1 December 2009 and thereby can also apply for HFP or NFP fellowships (deadlines 1 February and 1 March 2010 respectively).

Model organisms have been essential for improving our knowledge of human disease. Especially rodents, mainly mouse and rat, are often used for this purpose, as well as for pre-clinical trials of new drugs and toxicology screens. However, often animal models fail to mimic human disease adequately. As a consequence drugs successfully tested in animal models fail in costly clinical trials or are falsely discarded. Goal of this project is to explore the suitability of rodents as a model organism for human disease, specifically metabolic syndrome.

Students should be aware that the LExS is not a full scholarship. It is necessary to find additional funding to be able to finance their study and stay completely.

One of the requirements for being granted a residence permit in the Netherlands is that students must submit proof that they have sufficient financial means to finance their study period in the Netherlands. Leiden University advises a budget, not including the tuition fee, of approx. €10,000 to €14,000 per year to cover the costs for rent, insurance, living expenses, course books and local transportation. How much money students actually spend will of course depend on their life style and spending habits.

APPLICATION

To apply for the scholarship, you should write a letter of motivation (in Word) of a maximum of 500 words, in which you indicate why you believe you should be considered for this scholarship. The Word document can then be attached to your online application for the master’s programmes for which you are applying.

University of Maastricht, the youngest university in the Netherlands, is renowned for its unique, innovative, problem-based learning system, which is characterized by a small-scale and approach students. Research at UM is characterized by a thematic approach and multidisciplinary, and is concentrated in the research institutes and schools.

UM has now about 11500 students and 3000 employees. Reflecting the high international profile university, a large quantity of both students and staff abroad. The university welcomes 6 faculties: the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics and Management, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Psychology.

The International Institute for Globalization and Regulation (IGIR) is an interdisciplinary institute at the University of Maastricht which to focus the regulatory process and the tools used to manage the dynamic interaction between economic globalization and fundamental social values .

The Faculty of Law of Maastricht University is offering:

* Two Ph.D. positions in the field of International Economic Law
* The Ph.D. projects will be carried out in the framework of the Institute for Globalisation and International Regulation
* One Ph.D. project concerns the tension between private-sector standards reflecting consumer concerns and developing country market access under WTO law. (Vacancy Notice AT2007.210)
* One Ph.D. project concerns the conflict between the liberalization of trade in services and the protection of core societal values under the General Agreement on Trade in Services. (Vacancy Notice AT2007.209)

Tasks
To engage in scientific research under surveillance, which will eventually lead to a doctoral thesis (85%) and lectures on subjects A to the Faculty of curriculum (15%).

Requirements
Lawyer qualified with an excellent knowledge of international economic law, an advanced degree in this field is a definite advantage and enthusiastic and determined with the researcher forefront of analytical and writing skills of English proficiency.

Appointment
The appointment will be full time, for a period of four years and should lead to a doctoral thesis. The appointment will take effect on 1 September 2008. The gross monthly salary will be in accordance with the regulations of the University for academic staff, which ranged from € 1956 – in the first year, up to a maximum of € 2502, – in the last year.

Applicants must submit a written request before January 15, 2008, accompanied by a detailed CV, a transcript of records indicating grades, a letter of application and details of three arbitrators, at least two of whom are familiar with the candidate `s academic abilities.
