Google Anita Borg Scholarship 2010 for Female Students from Europe, Middle East, Africa
July 25, 2009 by student scholarship · Leave a Comment
Dr. Anita Borg (1949-2003) devoted her adult life to revolutionising the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields. Her combination of technical expertise and fearless vision continues to inspire and motivate countless women to become active participants and leaders in creating technology.
As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to furthering Anita’s vision, we are pleased to announce The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship: Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Through the scholarship, we aim to encourage women to excel in computing and technology, and become active role models and leaders.

PhD Scholarship – Multi-Scale Modelling Of Cutting Of Bone
Application Deadline: 6 August 2009
Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering – Mechanics of Advanced Materials Research Group
A PhD Scholarship is available for a high-calibre candidate to work on a new project on miniature ultrasonic cutting devices for high precision minimal access orthopaedic surgical procedures. The successful candidate will be a part of research collaboration between Loughborough University, University of Glasgow and University of Edinburgh. The proposed programme of research brings together a unique collaboration between the three research groups in the UK that are engaged in researching the mechanics of the surgical tool/bone interaction to deliver devices that rely on power ultrasonics to improve the accuracy and control of orthopaedic surgery involving deep penetration into bone. In combining this expertise, the aim is to deliver a new generation of novel miniaturised ultrasonic bone cutting devices to deal with the challenges of minimal access bone cutting surgical procedures. The proposal is supported by Mectron Medical, the inventors of piezosurgery, and Sonic Systems, a leading UK SME dedicated to developing new ultrasonic technologies.
Biophysics/Systems Biology: Photochrome Signaling in Plants

Biophysics/Systems Biology: Photochrome signaling in plants
Applications are invited for a PhD position in the group of Dr. Christian Fleck http://www.fdmold.uni-freiburg.de/~cfleck/.
The successful candidate will work on the computational modeling of the phytochrome signaling in plants in close collaboration with experimental groups in Freiburg, Germany and Edinburgh, UK. Plant survival depends crucially on the availability of external light. Therefore, multiple photoreceptors (light sensing proteins) regulate the plant development according to the spectral quality and light intensity. In order to understand the light regulated developmental processes in plants it is essential to understand the underlying light mediated dynamics of the photoreceptors. Much knowledge about the phyB dynamics and the light induced morphogenetic effects was gathered over the last decades.
The meaningful understanding of the data, however, is beyond an intuitive approach and requires theoretical modelling. In this joint project together with experimental groups in Freiburg and Edinburgh,UK, we try to understand the dynamics of light regulated processes using detailed information about the molecular interactions. To this end we mainly employ non-linear and stochastic differential equations. Due to the complexity of the equations one has in most case to revert to numerical methods. In this collaboration we have a very intense interaction between theory and experiment. We are looking for someone who wishes to work theoretically but in close collaboration with biologists.

Calcium signals and reactive oxygen species in PDGF-BB, VEGF and FGF-2 mediated vasculogenesis of embryonic stem cells
Our group is investigating signaling pathways of cardiovascular differentiation of embryonic stem cells of mouse and human origin. In the current research project the interaction of intracellular calcium and reactive oxygen species during vasculogenesis of stem cells will be assessed.
We will investigate the cooperation of pro-angiogenic growth factors, e.g. VEGF, PDGF-BB and FGF-2 in blood vessel differentiation and the impact of oxygen radicals and intracellular calcium changes in this process. We are seeking a highly motivated student who is enthousiastic for stem cell biology and wants to integrate into an internationally oriented research group. The current research project is a subproject of the international graduate college “Signalling Mechanisms in Lung Physiology and Disease” (SMLPD) (see: http://uglc.de/education/smldp).
